Copenhagen Airport gains new insights into APU usage with Assaia’s AI-powered emissions monitoring
Copenhagen Airport (CPH) today announced the go-live of Assaia's EmissionsControl technology to monitor aircraft ground emissions from Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) in real-time. The innovative solution tackles an industry challenge that's been holding back aviation sustainability efforts: the difficulty airports worldwide face in taking targeted action to minimize APU usage due to lack of comprehensive data on APU runtime across variable locations and weather conditions.
Copenhagen, Denmark –9 September 2025 – Copenhagen Airport (CPH) today announced the go-live of Assaia's EmissionsControl technology to monitor aircraft ground emissions from Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) in real-time. The innovative solution tackles an industry challenge that's been holding back aviation sustainability efforts: the difficulty airports worldwide face in taking targeted action to minimize APU usage due to lack of comprehensive data on APU runtime across variable locations and weather conditions.

This implementation marks a global first, making CPH the first airport in the world to deploy this advanced emissions monitoring capability across the majority of its stands. Thanks to Assaia, CPH now has 24/7, year-round view of APU usage, setting a new standard for airport sustainability and operational insight.
The AI-powered system uses advanced camera technology to track APU usage during aircraft turnarounds, providing CPH with detailed, weather-contextualized data. This enables CPH to better understand real-world APU usage patterns and lays the groundwork for future initiatives aimed at reducing emissions.
Kristoffer Plenge-Brandt, COO, CPH says: “The use of APU contributes to noise and emissions of CO₂ and air pollution, including ultrafine particles, which are a concern for both our employees and our neighboring communities. That’s why we aim to reduce APU usage as much as possible. With this new tool, we can identify when our operational guidelines are not being met and understand the reasons behind it. That insight is essential for developing effective measures to support cleaner ground operations."

The system delivers real-time insights through a user-friendly interface that lets operations teams understand when APUs are running longer than necessary while ground power alternatives are available. This data-driven approach enables both CPH and its airline partners to move beyond assumptions and begin exploring targeted initiatives to minimize unnecessary APU usage. Airlines operating at CPH will see reduced fuel consumption and lower operational costs by enabling ground handlers to further minimize unnecessary APU usage, helping reduce emissions and improve air quality.
This implementation supports CPH’s broader sustainability strategy. The airport has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions from its own operations by 2030 and continues to invest in technologies that help build a deeper understanding of emissions sources and reduction opportunities.
